“Damsel in Distress”

Fifteen issues in and Blue Devil is still delivering the goods — the cover to issue #16 (September 1985) by Paris Cullins and inker Gary Martin says it all: a white-haired woman in green looks fiercely alarmed as a horned, blue-skinned demon looms from one side while a blond hero in red squares off from the other, fists clenched and ready. The cover copy cheekily winks at longtime readers ("If you don't know what happens next, friends — you haven't been paying attention"), perfectly matching the book's signature mix of action and humor. Gary Cohn, Dan Mishkin, and Alan Kupperberg are along for the ride on the interior of this "Damsel in Distress" chapter — though whether that damsel stays distressed for long is another matter entirely.
