The Spectacular Spider-Men #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThe Spectacular Spider-Men #1 marks the first time Peter Parker and Miles Morales have headlined a shared ongoing series in the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616), filling a structural gap in the Spider-Man line that had existed since the two characters began appearing together. Rather than positioning Peter as Miles's superior mentor, writer Greg Weisman reframes their dynamic as an evolving peer friendship built on weekly civilian meetups — a deliberately grounded premise that commentators compared to DC's World's Finest team-up format. The issue also functions as a creative homecoming: Weisman, whose 2008 animated series 'The Spectacular Spider-Man' remains one of the most beloved Spider-Man adaptations ever produced, brought a cohort of characters from that cartoon and from his earlier Marvel comic work directly into the 616 continuity, giving the book an unusually deep bench of supporting players from day one.

Marvel announced the series in November 2023, pairing Weisman — best known outside comics as creator of Gargoyles and showrunner of the 2008 animated Spectacular Spider-Man — with artist Humberto Ramos, who had himself drawn Spectacular Spider-Man and is one of the most recognized Amazing Spider-Man pencillers of the modern era. Weisman described his intent as chronicling the evolution of Peter and Miles from mentor-and-protégé to genuine colleagues, treating the series as a spiritual companion to his animated work rather than a continuation of it. The first arc, 'Arachnobatics,' launched March 6, 2024, with a 40-page debut issue inked by Victor Olazaba and colored by Edgar Delgado; the series ran for fifteen issues before concluding in May 2025.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First ongoing series in Marvel's main continuity (Earth-616) to co-star both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as equal leads, launching March 6, 2024 (cover-dated May 2024).
- Written by Greg Weisman (showrunner of the 2008 animated 'The Spectacular Spider-Man') with art by Humberto Ramos, inks by Victor Olazaba, and colors by Edgar Delgado; the creative team also produced a 40-page debut.
- First appearance of Doctor Seymour Krepps in any Marvel comic; he is introduced inventorying the old laboratory of Miles Warren (the Jackal) at Empire State University alongside Professor Raymond Warren.
- The full name 'Raymond Aaron Warren' is formally established in this issue for Peter's former high school science teacher, the Jackal's brother; the middle name 'Aaron' is a direct nod to Weisman's animated series, where that character was named Aaron Warren.
- Kenny Kong makes his first significant 616 appearance meeting Peter Parker directly — a milestone noted by fans, since the 616 Kong (first introduced in Weisman's Starbrand & Nightmask #1, 2016) is modeled on the animated series character, who was in turn adapted from Brian Michael Bendis's Ultimate Spider-Man original.
- Sha Shan Nguyen, Flash Thompson's longtime on-again-off-again love interest dating back to Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #19 (1978), resurfaces here after years of near-total absence from mainstream continuity.
- New civilian characters Anna Romney, Juliet Marcos, and Cedric Harrison (a former neighbor of Miles Morales) are introduced as part of a deliberate ESU-campus supporting cast; Juliet Marcos later becomes the superhero Elementary over the course of the series.
- The story's first-issue chapter is titled 'Arachnobatics, Chapter #1: Regulars' and establishes the central conceit of weekly Wednesday civilian meetups at the ESU Coffee Bean as the spine of the series, with a Hulk-sized Jackal as the action setpiece.
