John E. Workman Jr.
John E. Workman Jr. was born on June 20, 1950, in Beckley, West Virginia, and spent his early childhood in Glen Rogers, West Virginia, and Darlington, Maryland. Inspired by the George Reeves *Superman* television series, he began writing short stories and drawing as a child. After his family moved to Aberdeen, Washington, Workman studied art and journalism at Grays Harbor College and Clark College, earning an Associate in Arts degree from Grays Harbor in 1970.
Workman is best known as a letterer, editor, writer, artist, designer, and colorist in comics. His most celebrated collaboration was with writer/artist Walter Simonson, with whom he worked frequently. He also lettered the entirety of Grant Morrison and Rachel Pollack’s acclaimed run on *Doom Patrol* for DC Comics. His extensive lettering credits span over six decades, including work on *The Incredible Hulk*, *Gemini Blood*, *The L.A.W. (Living Assault Weapons)*, and *The Creeper*.
Though less publicly recognized than some peers, Workman’s steady hand and versatility made him a trusted craftsman across multiple publishers. He remained active in the industry into the 2020s, contributing to both mainstream and independent titles. His career reflects a deep commitment to the visual and narrative mechanics of comics, earning him respect among creators and fans alike.
