“Chain Missing Link!”

A sportsy scene sets the stage for this digest-sized collection, as Betty — wearing a Riverdale basketball uniform — stands in a doorway between two very different worlds: a locker-room strategy session on one side (where Nancy, jersey number 7, looks on) and Archie cheerfully chatting with Veronica in her cheerleader outfit on the other. Betty's speech bubble says it all — "Yes! How do I get Archie away from Ronnie?" — capturing the eternal Riverdale rivalry with a smile. Stan Goldberg's pencils and Bob Smith's inks bring the gang to life with the warm, energetic style that made Archie Comics a staple of 2002 reading, and this double digest packs in plenty of stories, including Bob Bolling's own "Chain Missing Link!

No one at school wants to trade sandwiches with Sue Stringly, who never has anything good to eat since her father has been out of work. She claims that she has a secret boyfriend named "Parnell" who loves to eat her sandwiches. Little Archie follows her after school and discovers that Parnell is a stray cat that Sue is feeding. Little Archie has to decide whether to use the money he's saved up to buy new Silver Flash roller skates, or use it to help Sue and Parnell.
