“Petal Pusher”

This June 1991 installment of Jughead captures the gang's favorite crown-wearing food enthusiast in a perfectly playful moment — seated at a diner counter with a girl, both sharing a laugh, while his daydream bubble reveals a massive "Pope's Deluxe" hero sandwich that would make any appetite envious. The running gag is right there in the dialogue: she sighs that she's "wishing for a six-foot hero," and Jughead, naturally, is thinking the exact same thing — though his thoughts are clearly fixed on the sandwich rather than romance. Rex W. Lindsey's cover art brings the whole Riverdale crew into the mix with a lively, lighthearted energy that makes this Archie 50th Anniversary-era issue a fun snapshot of everything that makes Jughead such an endearing character.
