About this issue

This issue contains the opening installment of "The Marshal of Sandstone" by Major Daniel Boone Dumont, a Western pulp serial. Chapters I and II depict the roadside robbery of a deteriorating stagecoach traveling the San Miguel Valley by two bandits known as Colonel Double-edge and his partner Ben. The stage carries three inconsequential passengers and minimal cargo—a damaged express-box and mail-bag containing little of value. Colonel Double-edge (also called "Devil Dick") searches the victims and driver methodically, yielding only small sums of money, a few watches, and a mysterious note the ranchman passenger had addressed to him. Disappointed by the meager haul, the bandits retreat to camp where they rest, eat, and discuss leaving the unprofitable territory. The narrative emphasizes their frustration with the poverty-stricken route and hints at unresolved plot elements regarding the passenger's note and the marshal referenced in the story's title.
