Tony Abruzzo, born Anthony Joseph Abruzzo in 1916, was an American comic book artist whose clean, emotionally expressive linework defined the look of romance comics for two decades. He passed away in 1990. Abruzzo entered the industry in the late 1940s, and by 1954 had settled into a long, steady run at National Periodicals (later DC Comics), where he became the primary artist for *Girls' Love Stories*, illustrating that title continuously until 1972. His signature style—marked by elegant figures, dramatic close-ups, and a keen sense of longing—made him a favorite among readers of DC’s romance line. He was a prolific contributor to *Girls' Romances*, *Secret Hearts*, *Falling in Love*, *Heart Throbs*, and *Twin Hearts*, often handling pencils, inks, and colors. In a peculiar twist of pop-culture history, Roy Lichtenstein appropriated several of Abruzzo’s romance panels in the early 1960s, transforming them into iconic paintings. Abruzzo’s career spanned more than thirty years, with credited work appearing from 1947 to 1979. Though he never sought the spotlight, his influence endures in the visual language of mid-century romance comics, and his art remains a touchstone for scholars of both comics and fine art.
