Rumiko Takahashi
Born on October 10, 1957, Rumiko Takahashi is among the most commercially successful manga artists Japan has produced, with over 230 million copies of her work in circulation worldwide — a figure that places her among the best-selling authors in any medium. Her career began with *Urusei Yatsura* in 1978, a romantic comedy that quickly established her distinctive blend of slapstick, supernatural elements, and warmly drawn ensemble casts. That series earned her the first of two Shogakukan Manga Awards in 1980, followed by a Seiun Award in 1987.
Takahashi went on to create *Ranma 1/2*, a shape-shifting martial-arts comedy that became a global phenomenon, and later *Inuyasha*, a feudal-era fantasy adventure that demonstrated her range and sustained storytelling ambition across hundreds of chapters. *Inuyasha* brought her a second Shogakukan Manga Award in 2001, while *Mermaid Saga* earned her a second Seiun Award in 1989. In the North American market, her titles — including *Ranma 1/2* and *Inuyasha* in its various serialized formats — appeared across nearly 290 issues between 1989 and 2022.
Her recognition has extended well beyond Japan. In 2019 she received the Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême, becoming only the second woman and second Japanese creator to win that honor. The following year the Japanese government awarded her the Medal with Purple Ribbon for her contributions to the arts.
