Jim Rugg
1977–
Jim Rugg was born on February 1, 1977, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and has built a career as a cartoonist and illustrator known for his playful, affectionate homages to 1970s comics and pop culture. He entered the field in the early 2000s, quickly establishing himself with the graphic novel *Street Angel*, a series that blends scrappy urban adventure with a retro, slightly irreverent sensibility. Rugg’s work often balances sharp satire with genuine nostalgia, as seen in *Afrodisiac*, *One Model Nation*, and his contributions to the *The P.L.A.I.N. Janes* and *Janes in Love* books. He has also contributed short pieces to a wide range of publications, from *VH1* and *New York* magazine to anthologies like *Meathaus* and *Dark Horse Presents*. Over a two-decade career spanning 2004 to 2024, Rugg has served as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 57 issues, with his most credited titles including *American Virgin*, *The Guild*, *Adventure Time*, and *Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers*. He co-hosted the YouTube channel *Cartoonist Kayfabe* alongside fellow Pittsburgh native Ed Piskor, offering insight into the craft and history of comics. Rugg’s legacy is one of a versatile creator who channels a deep affection for comic-book history into work that feels both familiar and distinctly his own.
