Jack Rickard
1922–1983
Jack Rickard was born on March 8, 1922, and died on July 22, 1983. He is best remembered as a prolific contributor to *Mad* magazine, where his artwork appeared in more than 175 issues, including 35 covers, and he also illustrated sixteen paperback covers for the publication. Rickard studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology on an art scholarship before working in commercial art for Chaite Studios during the 1950s. He created covers for men's magazines like *Adventure* and *True Detective*, contributed to Charlton Comics, and assisted on the *Li'l Abner* comic strip. His advertising work caught the attention of *Mad*'s editors, and he began illustrating for the humor magazine in 1961, remaining a regular contributor until his death from cancer 22 years later. Rickard's signature style blended crisp linework with a satirical edge, making him a key visual voice for the magazine's parodies and features. He collaborated closely with the *Mad* stable of writers and artists, though his own name became synonymous with the book's irreverent look. His legacy endures through the many issues he enlivened, and his work is cataloged across titles such as *Mad Special*, *Svenska Mad*, and *Swinging Mad*.
