Who is Gwen Stacy?

Gwendolyne Stacy was a brilliant science student at Empire State University who crossed paths with Peter Parker on campus. The daughter of NYPD Captain George Stacy, she had no superpowers but became one of the most important people in Spider-Man's world.

Few characters in Marvel history have left as permanent a mark as Gwen Stacy, who stepped onto the Silver Age stage in The Amazing Spider-Man #31 in 1965, brought to life by the legendary team of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Across an extraordinary 61-year publishing history and nearly 600 catalog appearances — 19 of them recognized as key collector issues — she has proven herself one of the most enduring and emotionally resonant figures in comics. She moves through some of Marvel's most iconic company: Peter Parker, Mary Jane Watson, Harry Osborn, J. Jonah Jameson, and Aunt May all share her world, placing her at the very heart of the Spider-Man universe. From the classic pages of The Amazing Spider-Man to the alternate-reality spotlight of Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider, Gwen Stacy is a character whose presence — in whatever form she takes — continues to define what superhero storytelling can mean.

Trivia

  • Gwen Stacy's shocking death in The Amazing Spider-Man #121 is widely regarded as a turning point for mainstream comics, effectively shattering the safe, consequence-free status quo that had defined 1960s superhero storytelling.marvel.fandom.com
  • Rather than simply undoing the tragedy, Marvel brought Gwen back in ways that explicitly preserved the original death's weight, leaning on clones and alternate-universe versions to revisit the character without cheapening what happened.marvel.fandom.com
  • Brian Michael Bendis has written more of Gwen Stacy's comics than any other writer in our catalog — 84 issues.
