About this Issue

Amazing Spider-Man #108 is the debut of Sha Shan Nguyen (later Sister Sun), a Vietnamese character whose introduction wove the trauma and moral complexity of the Vietnam War directly into Spider-Man's supporting cast — an unusually grounded move for mainstream superhero comics in the Bronze Age. The two-part 'Vengeance From Vietnam!' arc it opens is also historically significant as the final original complete storyline that Stan Lee scripted for the title, making it a genuine creative watershed in the series' history. The issue further introduces the Giant One and develops Flash Thompson's post-war backstory in a way that permanently recontextualized him from comic-relief bully to a scarred, morally complicated veteran — a character evolution that would pay dividends for decades.

History

Written by Stan Lee and fully penciled and inked by John Romita Sr. (with Tony Mortellaro handling background inks), the issue appeared with a May 1972 cover date under editor-in-chief Roy Thomas. It opens a two-part arc that scholar and fan historians have since identified as Lee's last batch of original, complete Spider-Man scripts — a fitting close to the most consequential run the title would see until David Michelinie's tenure in the late 1980s. In a curious footnote, the letters page of this very issue contains a published letter from a then-unknown David Michelinie, years before he became the series' second-longest-running writer.
