Who is Brer Bear?

Brer Bear is a large, slow-witted bear character rooted in the classic Uncle Remus folklore tradition, brought to comics through adaptations of the popular Disney animated material. He frequently clashes with the clever Brer Rabbit, usually coming out the worse for it.

Lumbering out of the Golden Age in 1949, Brer Bear made his comics debut in Four Color #208 under the pen of creator Dick Moores, bringing that beloved folkloric brute to the four-color page for Disney fans young and old. Over an impressive span stretching all the way to 2016 β€” nearly seven decades of comics life β€” he's turned up across beloved Disney anthology staples like Walt Disney's Comics and Stories and Walt Disney Comics Digest, sharing pages with an all-star roster that includes Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. He may clock in at 29 catalog appearances, but for collectors who love the rich, sprawling world of Disney comics, Brer Bear is a satisfying piece of Golden Age heritage worth tracking down.
