About this Issue

Web of Spider-Man #118 is the linchpin issue of Marvel's sprawling mid-1990s Clone Saga: it marks the first time Ben Reilly — a clone of Peter Parker who had been wandering in exile for years — appears in a homemade superhero costume and begins acting as a web-slinger in his own right, a moment that set the entire Scarlet Spider chapter of Spider-Man history in motion. The issue also opens the four-part 'Exile Returns' crossover, the story that formally separated the four Spider-Man titles into a Peter Parker half and a Ben Reilly half — a structural editorial experiment unprecedented in the franchise. Because Ben Reilly would go on to temporarily replace Peter Parker as the primary Spider-Man across all five concurrent titles in 1995–96, this issue functions as the true origin point of that era. The character's distinctive blue-hoodie-over-red-suit look, debuted here, became one of the most recognizable Spider-Man adjacent designs of the decade and has endured in animated series, video games, and film.

History

The Clone Saga itself was conceived in editorial meetings where the Spider-Man office, under editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco, was tasked with generating a sales event comparable to DC's 'Death of Superman'; it was writer Terry Kavanagh — the very man who scripted this issue — who first proposed reviving the 1975 Spider-clone. Kavanagh then wrote the 'Exile Returns' arc, with penciler Steven Butler and inker Randy Emberlin handling the art, while editors Eric Fein and Danny Fingeroth oversaw the story. The iconic Scarlet Spider costume Ben assembles in this issue was designed by artist Tom Lyle, who won a unanimous vote among the Spider-Man art team after editor Danny Fingeroth asked the artists to independently develop looks emphasizing practicality over traditional superhero flash.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Ben Reilly in a superhero costume — the outfit that would become known as the Scarlet Spider suit — making this his first costumed appearance even though the 'Scarlet Spider' name itself is not applied until Spider-Man #52.
  • Written by Terry Kavanagh, penciled by Steven Butler, inked by Randy Emberlin, colored by Kevin Tinsley, lettered by Steve Dutro; edited by Eric Fein and Danny Fingeroth, with Tom DeFalco as editor-in-chief.
  • Part 1 of the four-part 'Exile Returns' crossover (subtitled 'Memories'), which continued in Spider-Man #52, Web of Spider-Man #119, and Spider-Man #53.
  • Features a significant Venom (Eddie Brock) appearance as the antagonist Ben resolves to pursue, mirroring Reilly's own sense of moral obligation — the two characters run parallel 'memory tour' narratives throughout the issue.
  • The Scarlet Spider costume — a red spandex bodysuit with a blue sleeveless hoodie bearing a black spider emblem, an external utility belt, and wrist-worn web-shooters — was designed by artist Tom Lyle after editor Danny Fingeroth asked the Spider-Man art team to prioritize functional simplicity.
  • Ben Reilly is a clone of Peter Parker originally introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #149 (1975) by writer Gerry Conway; this issue is the direct launching pad for his role as a protagonist across Web of Spider-Man and the adjective-less Spider-Man title throughout the Clone Saga.
  • Also contains the first appearance of Daily Bugle reporter Ken Ellis, who would become a recurring supporting character in the Clone Saga era.
  • The issue has been collected in multiple trade editions, including Spider-Man: The Complete Clone Saga Epic Vol. 1 (2010), the Venomnibus Vol. 1 (2018), and Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection Vol. 27 — The Clone Saga; a ToyBiz action-figure reprint and a newsstand edition also exist as distinct print variants.
