Trivia · 8 facts
- First full appearance of Humbug (Buck Mitty), a disgraced Empire State University entomology professor who weaponizes amplified insect sounds and whose name is a deliberate pun — 'Hum' + 'Bug.'
- First appearance (cameo, in shadow only) of Solo (James Bourne), a cybernetically enhanced counter-terrorism operative with short-range teleportation abilities; he and Spider-Man do not meet in this issue.
- Written by David Michelinie with art by Marc Silvestri (pencils) and Bob McLeod (inks); edited by James Owsley (Christopher Priest) under editor-in-chief Jim Shooter.
- The story title is 'Humbug!' and the issue carries a cover date of October 1986, with an actual release date of June 24, 1986.
- The issue directly continues the spider-sense subplot from Web of Spider-Man #18, in which Peter was shoved onto subway tracks without his sense triggering — Michelinie's earliest planted thread leading toward Venom's introduction.
- Solo's cameo depicts him teleporting into a West German embassy to neutralize terrorists, establishing his catchphrase ethos ('While Solo lives, terror dies!') and setting up a full appearance in subsequent issues.
- Humbug would later reform and join the post-Civil War incarnation of Heroes for Hire, before being mutated by Brood eggs and killed by Shang-Chi in Heroes for Hire vol. 2 #15 — giving this debut issue the weight of a complete character arc.
- The issue was collected in the Marvel trade paperback Web of Spider-Man Vol. 2 (July 2012, ISBN 978-0785163329), which reprints issues #19–32 and Annual #3.
