Venom: Lethal Protector #4
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeVenom: Lethal Protector #4 is the pivotal chapter in what was already a landmark moment for the symbiote corner of the Marvel Universe — the first solo series ever built around Eddie Brock — and it delivers the debut of five new symbiote characters in a single issue, a feat unmatched in the franchise's history. Scream (Donna Diego), the first female symbiote, makes her full in-story entrance here, confronting Spider-Man in a mall before the Life Foundation reveals that four additional offspring — Agony, Lasher, Phage, and Riot — have been germinated from Venom's forcibly harvested 'seeds.' The issue established the Life Foundation symbiotes as a concept that would ripple forward through decades of comics, a 1995 video game, and ultimately serve as the template for the antagonists of Sony's 2018 Venom film. It also marks the creative handoff from Mark Bagley to Ron Lim on interior art, a transition that split critical opinion on the series and is still debated by readers today.

The six-issue Lethal Protector limited series, written by David Michelinie and edited by Danny Fingeroth under editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco, ran from February to July 1993 — the first series to center Eddie Brock as its lead and the first to dig into his background before he became Venom. Mark Bagley penciled the opening three issues, but Ron Lim — then well-known for his cosmic Marvel work on Silver Surfer — stepped in as interior penciler beginning with issue #4, while Bagley remained on covers through the run. The symbiote-spawn storyline in this issue drew deliberately on the in-universe logic already established by Carnage: Michelinie used the fact that a fragment of the Venom symbiote left behind had created Cletus Kasady's offspring as the narrative justification for the Life Foundation's extraction process, tying the new characters organically into existing continuity.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Scream (Donna Diego), the first female symbiote in Marvel Comics, debuting unnamed in this issue during a mall attack on Spider-Man.
- First cameo appearances of Agony (Leslie Gesneria), Lasher (Ramón Hernández), Phage (Carl Mach), and Riot (Trevor Cole) — all shown emerging from the Life Foundation's extraction process in the issue's closing pages.
- Written by David Michelinie; interior pencils by Ron Lim with inks by Sam de la Rosa and Al Milgrom; cover penciled by Mark Bagley and inked by Dan Panosian — issue #4 marks Ron Lim's first issue as interior artist on the series.
- The story introduces the Life Foundation's core plan: using a sonic device to harvest symbiote 'seeds' from the captive Eddie Brock and artificially accelerate them into five fully bonded super-soldier 'guardsmen,' a concept rooted in the organization's Cold War nuclear-apocalypse survivalism.
- Neither Scream nor her four 'siblings' were given their now-familiar names in this issue; the name 'Scream' originated in the 1995 Acclaim video game Spider-Man & Venom: Separation Anxiety, while Agony, Riot, Phage, and Lasher were not officially named in Marvel continuity until Carnage, U.S.A. #2 (2012).
- The issue was released on-sale March 30, 1993, with a May 1993 cover date; it exists in Direct Edition, Newsstand, and Australian variant editions.
- The full Lethal Protector series — including the content of this issue — was collected in trade paperback three times: July 1995 (cover by Simon Bisley), February 2011, and February 2018, and is also reprinted in the Venomnibus Vol. 1 (2018) and Venom Epic Collection: Lethal Protector (2021).
- The Lethal Protector storyline, and specifically its Life Foundation antagonists and the Riot symbiote introduced in this issue, directly inspired the plot of the 2018 Sony film Venom, as confirmed by director Ruben Fleischer and star Tom Hardy.
