“The Man Who Painted on Air”

Charlton's Unusual Tales #7 promises "Extraordinary Stories Never Before Told," and Steve Ditko's cover makes that tagline feel entirely earned. The eerie nighttime scene shows a painter holding a palette and brush, apparently rendering a ghostly, glowing portrait of a gaunt, brooding man in mid-air — a third figure lurks watchfully in the shadows behind them, while a moonlit cityscape fills the window beyond. It's a wonderfully unsettling setup for the featured tale, "The Man Who Painted on Thin Air," with Ditko's precise linework wringing genuine mystery out of every shadow.
