Ultimate Wolverine #9 marks the first appearances of both the Earth-6160 versions of F.O.R.G.E. and its founder Daniel (Forge) within the new Ultimate Universe, making it a debut issue for two significant supporting characters in the Opposition's tech infrastructure. The issue also delivers the first appearances of X-S Unit One and X-S Unit Two — the horrifying Sentinel/mutant hybrids built from the bodies of Scott Summers and Alex Summers respectively — a body-horror reimagining of two of the X-Men's most enduring figures that crystallizes the series' thesis about state violence against mutants. As the first standalone chapter of the series, it demonstrates the creative team's confidence in crafting self-contained stories within a dense dystopian continuity, while meaningfully advancing Logan's unresolved trauma from his Winter Soldier past. The issue also marks the first destruction of a Master Mold unit within Earth-6160.

History

The series was announced by writer Chris Condon and artist Alessandro Cappuccio at Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con in October 2024 and launched in January 2025 — becoming the first new ongoing title added to Marvel's second Ultimate Universe line after its inaugural wave of four titles. Editor Wil Moss personally recruited Condon, who had previously written That Texas Blood and Venom War: Daredevil, framing the project as a chance to craft what Condon described as the definitive Wolverine reading experience within the Earth-6160 framework. Originally contracted for 12 issues, the series was extended due to its commercial reception, with Condon and Cappuccio agreeing to continue through issue #16 to run alongside the line's Ultimate Endgame conclusion.

Mikhail Rasputin operates under the codename 'Archangel' as leader of the Opposition in this universe — an inversion of his traditionally villainous 616 role; the 'Archangel' in the character index refers to Mikhail, not Warren Worthington III (who appears separately as the 'Angel Specimen').
