About this Issue

Ultimate Wolverine #8 marks the first appearance of the Earth-6160 incarnation of Warren Worthington III — Angel — a mutant whose natural wings have been surgically replaced with six metal appendages by the Eurasian Republic's Directorate X, making him a deliberately weaponized echo of the classic Archangel transformation but stripped of any of the original character's agency or memory. The issue delivers two meaningful character deaths within the nascent Ultimate Universe, as Abigail Brand and Beast (Hank McCoy) are killed by Angel before the Opposition can subdue him, demonstrating writer Chris Condon's willingness to use consequence and mortality as genuine storytelling tools rather than dramatic posturing. As the mid-series pivot episode of the series' first story arc, it reframes Logan's own history as a brainwashed weapon by placing him opposite a mirror-image victim — a move that deepens the series' thematic argument about state-manufactured violence and the possibility of reclaiming selfhood. Taken together with the broader Earth-6160 line, issue #8 is the entry point for a version of Angel that the Ultimate Universe uses as a tragic antagonist before eventually allowing him a measure of redemption within the Opposition.

History

The series was announced at Marvel's 'Next Big Thing' panel at New York Comic Con in October 2024, with editor Wil Moss recruiting Chris Condon — best known for the Image crime series That Texas Blood — to write, and Alessandro Cappuccio, who had recently completed a celebrated run on Jed MacKay's Moon Knight, as artist. Condon has described the book as bringing his horror-inflected, character-driven sensibility from That Texas Blood into the Marvel Universe, with Cappuccio's moody, shadow-heavy visual style forming an integral part of the series' oppressive atmosphere. Issue #8 was produced by the same core creative team as the surrounding arc — Condon, Cappuccio on full art duties, Bryan Valenza on colors, and Cory Petit on letters — and shipped on August 6, 2025, with two variant covers by Ryan Brown (1:25 incentive) and Andrea Sorrentino.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Warren Worthington III (Earth-6160), the Ultimate Universe's Angel — a mutant cyborg whose organic wings were replaced with metal ones by Directorate X scientists at the Stabil'nyy prison on Snake Island in the Black Sea.
  • Abigail Brand and Beast (Hank McCoy) are killed in this issue by Angel, making #8 a significant mortality chapter for the Opposition's roster.
  • Written by Chris Condon with art and covers by Alessandro Cappuccio; colors by Bryan Valenza; letters by Cory Petit; edited by Wil Moss — the series' consistent main-title creative team.
  • The issue's plot follows Strike Team X — Wolverine, Brand, Beast, Gambit (Remy LeBeau), Guardian (Alexei Shostakov), Widow (Natalia Romanova), and Sprite (Kitty Pryde) — raiding a Directorate X mutant-experimentation facility, only to find a sole surviving prisoner has already slaughtered every guard.
  • The B-plot advances Dr. Alonya Prostovich's scheme against the Opposition; she becomes aware that the Winter Soldier has defected and begins plotting retaliation — a thread that eventually leads to the Cerebomb storyline.
  • This Earth-6160 Angel is described explicitly as a 'mutant cyborg' with red eyes, metal wings, and degraded mental coherence — a deliberate structural parallel to Logan's own history as a mind-wiped weapon of the state.
  • Released August 6, 2025 (cover-dated October 2025); page count 29 story pages; rated T+ (ages 13 and up); two variant covers issued simultaneously (Andrea Sorrentino standard variant; Ryan Brown 1:25 incentive variant).
  • The series is set in Marvel's rebooted Ultimate Universe on Earth-6160, launched in 2023, of which this title is one of several ongoing books exploring the Maker's corrupted world — placing Angel's debut within a shared continuity context rather than as a standalone reimagining.
