About this Issue

Ultimate Wolverine #7 is the pivotal issue in which Logan formally receives his superhero codename within the Earth-6160 continuity: Sabretooth dubs him 'Rosomakha,' which Widow (Natalia Romanova) translates as 'Wolverine,' completing his transition from mindwiped Winter Soldier to acknowledged member of the Opposition. The issue also marks the first full active appearance of Mikhail Rasputin under the Archangel codename — a significant recontextualization of both the Rasputin family and the Archangel identity, since on Earth-6160 the name belongs to Colossus's eldest brother rather than Warren Worthington III. Creatively, it is the moment writer Chris Condon shifts the series from a brainwashing/escape thriller into a character-driven redemption story, foregrounding Logan's psychological struggle with his past atrocities and his relationships with Kitty Pryde and Sabretooth, while simultaneously demonstrating Ultimate Magik's dominion over Limbo as a weapon of terror against her own allies.

History

Ultimate Wolverine was announced at the Marvel Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con 2024 and was the first new ongoing series added to Marvel's relaunched Ultimate Universe (Earth-6160) after its four founding titles. Writer Chris Condon — previously known for indie work on That Texas Blood and Venom War: Daredevil — was recruited by editor Wil Moss specifically to build what Condon himself described as 'the ultimate Wolverine book' for lifelong fans, partnering with Moon Knight artist Alessandro Cappuccio. Issue #7 marks Cappuccio's return to interior art on the series after guest artist Alex Lins handled issues #5 and #6, and the series was originally contracted for 12 issues before being extended due to strong readership response.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released July 2, 2025 (cover date September 2025); written by Chris Condon, art and cover by Alessandro Cappuccio, colors by Bryan Valenza, letters by VC's Cory Petit, edited by Wil Moss.
  • Logan is officially named 'Rosomakha' (Russian for Wolverine) in this issue — coined by Sabretooth and translated aloud by Widow (Natalia Romanova) — marking the first in-story use of the Wolverine codename for the Earth-6160 version of the character.
  • Second appearance of Mikhail Rasputin (Earth-6160) under the Archangel codename; his first appearance was in Ultimate Wolverine #6. On Earth-6160, the Archangel name belongs to Colossus's eldest brother rather than Warren Worthington III.
  • Issue #7 is Alessandro Cappuccio's return to interior art after Alex Lins handled two prior issues (#5–6), and multiple critics noted this as among the artist's strongest work on the run.
  • The issue depicts Ultimate Magik (Illyana Rasputina) using Limbo as a punishment dimension, dragging antagonist Dr. Alonya Prostovich there after her failure — establishing the full scope of this version of Magik's power within the Earth-6160 continuity.
  • Kitty Pryde (Sprite) plays a key emotional role, helping Logan process the atrocities he committed as the Winter Soldier and reconnect with the Opposition — a deliberate echo of the classic Logan/Kitty mentor dynamic, but inverted in this universe.
  • The issue is part of the third story arc later collected in the Spanish-language Panini Comics edition Ultimate Wolverine #3 (2026), confirming international trade collection.
  • Variant covers for the issue were provided by Fabrizio De Tommaso (1:25 incentive) and Lucio Parrillo, in addition to the main Cappuccio cover.
