History

The series was conceived by writer Chris Condon and artist Alessandro Cappuccio as the final major addition to the second-wave Ultimate Universe (Earth-6160) line, filling in the geography of the Eurasian Republic that had been seeded in Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch's 'Ultimate Invasion.' Cappuccio, already known to Marvel readers for his Moon Knight run with Jed MacKay, served as series artist and cover designer, with Condon publicly clarifying — following a social-media controversy early in the series' run — that Cappuccio's masked Winter Soldier costume design was wholly original work and not derived from any prior creator's suggestion. For issues #5 and #6, Cappuccio stepped aside for guest penciler Alex Lins, who had previously illustrated Marvel's Namor series; editor Wil Moss oversaw both chapters, and the series was conceived as a planned 12-issue run, though it ultimately extended to 16 issues before concluding ahead of the Ultimate Endgame event.
