About this Issue

Thor #392 is the debut issue of Quicksand, a sand-bodied supervillainess who became one of the Thunder God's more persistent Copper Age adversaries and later turned up in major crossovers including the Masters of Evil and the Siege of Asgard. The issue simultaneously introduces Kevin Masterson — son of Eric Masterson, who had debuted just one issue earlier — a character whose own destiny as the second Thunderstrike would unfold across years of subsequent storytelling. The dual-front narrative structure, pitting Thor against a new physical threat while Daredevil contends with a delirious Hogun, also showcases the collaborative Marvel-universe crossover style that defined the DeFalco–Frenz era. Together these introductions make the issue a foundational chapter in the Masterson-family saga that would reshape the Thor title through the early 1990s.

In "Quicksand Kills!", Thor faces a dual threat as he battles the mysterious and deadly Quicksand in a clash of raw power, while chaos erupts among the Warriors Three when Hogun the Grim, injured and unhinged, goes on a rampage. With the fate of Asgard hanging in the balance, it's Daredevil—unarmed and unafraid—who must stand between Hogun and the innocent. Written by Tom DeFalco and brought to life with dynamic art by Ron Frenz, this 1988 Marvel classic features bold colors by Christie Scheele and sharp lettering by John Workman, with a striking cover by Ron Frenz and Brett Breeding.

History

Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz took over The Mighty Thor with issue #383 in 1987, stepping in after Walter Simonson concluded a celebrated four-year run on the series. Their collaboration was a reunion: the pair had previously worked together on The Amazing Spider-Man before being removed from that book in 1986. Notably, at the time Thor #392 was published DeFalco was simultaneously serving as Marvel's Editor-in-Chief — a position he held from 1987 to 1994 — making him one of very few Marvel EICs to actively write a front-line monthly title throughout his tenure. The issue was edited by Ralph Macchio with Marc Siry as assistant editor, and carries a cover-pencil and interior-pencil credit for Ron Frenz, with Brett Breeding credited as inker on the cover by the Grand Comics Database and Al Milgrom credited as interior inker by Marvel's own records.
