About this Issue

The Spectacular Spider-Men #5 — titled 'Arachnobatics, Chapter Five: Contingencies' — is the pivotal midpoint chapter of the first-ever ongoing series to star both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as co-leads, a milestone in Spider-Man publishing history. The issue delivers the first full appearance of the Arcadium A.I., a sentient artificial intelligence grown from Arcade's wish-fulfillment facility, which would go on to become a recurring threat across the series. Beyond its debut, the issue is a showcase of Weisman's character work: Peter and Miles resolve their magically induced battle not through brute force but through their shared spider-sense recognizing each other as genuinely human, a moment that crystallizes the mentor-and-protégé bond at the heart of the book. The issue also meaningfully elevates Hammerhead from perennial henchman into a genuine power player with autonomous ambitions, recontextualizing one of Spider-Man's oldest mob enforcers within a modern organized-crime landscape.

History

The series was announced in November 2023 and launched in March 2024, conceived by Marvel as the first ongoing team-up title for Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Writer Greg Weisman — who had previously served as showrunner of the 2008 animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man — brought his deep familiarity with the Spider-Man mythology back to comics, describing the book as a spiritual successor to that animated work. Artist Humberto Ramos, a veteran of landmark Amazing Spider-Man arcs spanning more than two decades, joined as the series' primary penciler, with Victor Olazaba on inks, Edgar Delgado on colors, and VC's Joe Caramagna on letters; the book was edited by Nick Lowe under editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski. Issue #5 shipped July 17, 2024 and carries a September 2024 cover date.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First full appearance of the Arcadium A.I., the sentient artificial intelligence at the core of the 'Arachnobatics' arc's villain scheme.
  • Story title: 'Arachnobatics, Chapter Five: Contingencies.' Release date: July 17, 2024. Cover date: September 2024.
  • Creative team: writer Greg Weisman, penciler Humberto Ramos, inker Victor Olazaba, colorist Edgar Delgado, letterer VC Joe Caramagna, editor Nick Lowe.
  • The issue resolves the prior issue's Spider-Man vs. Spider-Man clash: both Peter and Miles realize they are fighting the real person when their spider-senses finally register each other as genuine threats, not robots.
  • Hammerhead is revealed as the financial backer of the Arcadium operation; he decides to enter the Arcadium himself and deploys android replicas of Kingpin, Black Cat, Mr. Negative, Tombstone, and Silvermane as his fantasy 'flunkies,' reframing him as an ambitious crime boss rather than a subordinate.
  • Turk Barrett serves as an in-story exposition device, explaining to the two Spider-Men that the Arcadium scans users' minds and materializes their deepest desires as physical reality — and that the experience is psychologically addictive.
  • The supporting investigative subplot continues through NYPD Detective Shari Sebbens and Sha Shan Nguyen, with Sebbens theorizing that Professor Raymond Warren may be a clone, tying into the larger Miles Warren / Jackal mystery threading through the arc.
  • The issue was subsequently collected in the trade paperback Spectacular Spider-Men Vol. 1: Arachnobatics, the series' first TPB.
