The Incredible Hulk #382 is the narrative pivot point of Peter David's celebrated Pantheon era: it is the issue in which the newly merged, psychologically integrated Bruce Banner Hulk formally accepts membership in the Pantheon, committing to use his power for humanitarian good rather than raw destruction. That single story decision unlocked roughly four years of structured, character-driven Hulk storytelling — arguably the most critically respected run in the title's history — and gave the character a moral framework and supporting cast that redefined what a Hulk comic could be. The issue also marks the first appearance of Nadia Dornova, the estranged ex-wife of Emil Blonsky (the Abomination), who seeds a parallel emotional subplot about the human cost of gamma-radiation that pays off across several subsequent arcs. A prophecy delivered by the Pantheon's seer Delphi within these pages — glimpsing a blood-soaked, laughing Hulk — foreshadowed story developments that would not resolve until issue #400.

History

Writer Peter David and penciler Dale Keown produced this issue as the immediate sequel to their landmark #377 (January 1991), in which the merged 'professor' Hulk persona first emerged. Editor Bobbie Chase shepherded the run; inker Mark Farmer and colorist Glynis Oliver rounded out the creative team. The Pantheon had been seeded as far back as #368 (April 1990) and introduced as antagonists in #379, making #382 the payoff of a patient, multi-issue recruitment arc that David had been building for over a year. The issue was on sale April 16, 1991 with a June 1991 cover date, placing it squarely in the copper age peak of the David-Keown collaboration.

First appearance of Nadia Dornova (also credited as Nadia Dornova Blonsky), the estranged former-Soviet-actress wife of Emil Blonsky / the Abomination, who reappeared in later Hulk stories including King-Size Hulk #1 (2008).
Delphi, the Pantheon's precognitive seer, witnesses two visions in this issue: one of the Hulk accepting the Pantheon's offer, and one of a blood-covered, laughing Hulk — a dark omen that paid off in Incredible Hulk #400.
