“The Fourth Host”

Subtitled "When Gods Walk the Earth," this January 1977 issue puts the sheer scale of Jack Kirby's cosmic imagination on full display — the cover, penciled by Kirby and inked by John Verpoorten, is dominated by the massive helmeted head of a Space God looming over a mountainous landscape while terrified humans scramble in the foreground, a caped figure standing defiantly nearby. The cover's dialogue — "Come back! You can't escape the Space God!" and "We thought it was only a legend — but that thing is ALIVE!" — captures the awe and dread at the heart of "The Fourth Host." It's a wonderfully unsettling image that makes clear why Kirby's Eternals felt like something genuinely unlike anything else Marvel was publishing that year.
