The Eternals #7
The Eternals #7, titled 'The Fourth Host,' is one of the densest single-issue contributions to Marvel's Celestial mythology: it delivers the first full appearances of Celestials Jemiah the Analyzer and Tefral the Surveyor, cameo introductions of Eson the Searcher and Nezarr the Calculator, and the first mention of the One Above All — the supreme commander of the Celestial Fourth Host — who sits in silent vigil aboard the Celestial God-Ship high above Earth. That single issue therefore laid the cosmic hierarchy that subsequent writers, from Walt Simonson's Thor run through Neil Gaiman's 2006 Eternals relaunch and the 2021 MCU film, would draw on for decades. As a pivotal chapter within Kirby's larger ancient-astronaut epic, it also crystallizes the series' central dramatic tension: ordinary human beings (here, three SHIELD agents) confronting godlike beings whose power renders every weapon and attempt at defiance completely futile.

The Eternals #7 was written, penciled, and co-edited by Jack Kirby during his mid-1970s return to Marvel, where he had creative control over his own titles after a frustrating stint at DC Comics. The series grew directly out of Kirby's fascination with Erich von Däniken's 'ancient astronaut' theories and was originally to be titled 'The Celestials' and then 'Return of the Gods' before Marvel settled on 'Eternals' to sidestep potential legal complications with Chariots of the Gods. By issue #7, Mike Royer had taken over inking duties from John Verpoorten (who had inked issues #1–4), and Marv Wolfman served as Editor-in-Chief, with Archie Goodwin listed as consulting editor. Kirby's intent was for the series to exist outside regular Marvel continuity — a self-contained cosmic mythology — but Marvel editorial simultaneously pressured him to integrate elements of the wider Marvel Universe, a tension visible in the SHIELD agents who anchor this very issue.
