The Defenders #82

The cover of this April 1980 issue — penciled by Rich Buckler and inked by Al Milgrom — delivers a striking confrontation, with a raging Hulk bearing down from above while a sorcerer figure (Doctor Strange, judging by the distinctive blue tunic and Cloak of Levitation) is caught in the grip of a massive, eagle-like creature crackling with mystical energy. The tagline "Wizard Death!" gives the whole image an urgent, ominous weight that makes it hard not to flip straight to page one. With Ed Hannigan writing and the art team of Don Perlin and Joe Sinnott on interiors, this mid-run issue of The Defenders captures everything that made Marvel's "non-team" so compelling in 1980.
