The Defenders #83

The tagline says it all — "Duel in a Demon's Dark Mind!" — and Rich Buckler and Joe Rubinstein's cover delivers on that promise with a massive, ghastly green demonic face filling the sky as Doctor Strange, the winged Moondragon, and Sub-Mariner press their attack against it. The roster portraits in the upper-left corner (adding the Hulk to the mix) hint at the full scope of Marvel's most unconventional super-team facing a psychic threat that dwarfs them all. Issue #83 of The Defenders is a vivid slice of 1980 Marvel at its most imaginatively strange.
