“The Three Flaming Dooms!”

In "The Three Flaming Dooms!", Jon finds himself cast adrift after a brutal ambush by Baron Thorvald, washing ashore in Arabia where he’s mistaken for a golden-haired genie bound to grant three wishes. Written by Bill Finger and illustrated with dynamic precision by Joe Kubert—his inks lending grit to every panel—this 1957 adventure sees Jon on a perilous quest across deserts and seas to reclaim three sacred artifacts, each guarded by treachery and myth. The cover by Irv Novick captures the tale’s wild, exotic spirit, a 10-cent thrill from a golden age of comics.

Jon is ambushed by Baron Thorvald, conked, sealed in a barrel, and hurled into the sea... The cask comes ashore in Arabia, and the old man and his daughter who open it think Jon is a golden-haired genie who must grant three wishes! He must recover three artifacts sacred to Baghdad. Jon catapults onto a ship to recover a famous shield, skis and "flies" over sand to regain a helmet, and plies a "magic carpet" and "magic lamp" oil to recover a sword. He's given a boat to sail home, where he must battle another tyrant. And the old man's daughter sighs...
