About this Issue

The Brave and the Bold #30 is the third and final tryout appearance of the Justice League of America before the team graduated to its own ongoing series — making it the last chapter of the proto-JLA era that reshaped superhero comics forever. Most critically, it introduces two of the team's most enduring adversaries: Amazo, the android built to replicate every Leaguer's powers, and his obsessive creator Professor Anthony Ivo, a mad scientist whose fixation on immortality would haunt the team across decades of stories. The issue also delivered a plot concept — a single villain capable of wielding the full combined power set of DC's greatest heroes — that writers have returned to again and again, in comics, animation, and live-action. Directly following this issue, DC launched Justice League of America #1, confirming the try-out experiment had been a resounding success and cementing the team-book format as a cornerstone of the Silver Age.

In "Case of the Stolen Super-Powers!", the Justice League finds their powers mysteriously drained as a series of bizarre thefts—catfish and cicadas in Europe—point to a deeper conspiracy. With Flash tracking the strange crimes and Snapper Crane hinting at a link to immortality, the team splits up to investigate long-lived creatures, only to face the relentless Amazo, who absorbs their abilities and leads them to Professor Ivo’s lab. Written by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Mike Sekowsky, with inks by Bernard Sachs and lettering by Gaspar Saladino, this 1960 issue features a pivotal showdown where Green Lantern turns the tables using his ring’s unique vulnerability. The cover, penciled by Sekowsky and inked by Murphy Anderson, captures the tension of the JLA’s desperate fight.

History

Editor Julius Schwartz had tasked writer Gardner Fox and penciller Mike Sekowsky with creating the Justice League as a modern update of the Golden Age's Justice Society of America, launching the team in The Brave and the Bold #28 (February–March 1960). The B&B title was being used at the time as a tryout vehicle for new characters and concepts; the JLA occupied issues #28, #29, and #30 before earning its own series. For issue #30, inker Bernard Sachs completed the art over Sekowsky's pencils, with Murphy Anderson providing the cover inks — the same creative core that had defined all three tryout installments. The issue went on sale April 28, 1960, with a cover date of June–July 1960, published under DC's then-formal imprint National Comics Publications.

Amazo was later prominently adapted in the Justice League animated series (2003, 'Tabula Rasa'), where the character was voiced by Robert Picardo, and Professor Ivo appeared as a recurring antagonist in the Arrowverse series Arrow (Season 2, portrayed by Dylan Neal).
