By 2009, the editorial team led by Stephen Wacker and associate editor Tom Brennan was feeling the strain of producing Amazing Spider-Man three times a month with a rotating stable of writers — a model that had been running since 2008's 'Brand New Day' relaunch. The decision was made to wind that era down at #647, 101 issues after it began, and hand sole writing duties to Slott, who had distinguished himself within the group. The title simultaneously shifted from a thrice-monthly to a twice-monthly schedule at an expanded page count, with Humberto Ramos serving as the primary penciler for the opening arc (rotating with Marcos Martín and Stefano Caselli going forward), inker Carlos Cuevas, and colorist Edgar Delgado rounding out the core visual team. The issue shipped in November 2010 with a January 2011 cover date and was accompanied by an unusually large slate of variant covers — including a Marcos Martín wraparound, a Stefano Caselli cover, two J. Scott Campbell variants (one a limited 1-in-100 retailer incentive), a blank cover, and a 2nd printing — reflecting Marvel's confidence in the launch.
