The 'New Ways to Die' arc (#568–573) was the first extended multi-part storyline of the Brand New Day era, which saw Amazing Spider-Man shift to a thrice-monthly publishing schedule driven by a rotating writers' collective known as the Spidey Braintrust, with Dan Slott as the primary architect of this particular story. According to Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort, it was editor Steve Wacker who originally conceived of a 'White Venom' — a visual and thematic inverse of the classic Venom design, inspired partly by conversations with Marvel's action-figure division about the commercial appeal of a white-costumed variant. John Romita Jr.'s return to the Amazing Spider-Man title made the six-part arc logistically possible, as his speed and reliability allowed the book's demanding production schedule to absorb a single artist through all six chapters.
