“Unintended Consequences”

Mike Deodato's cover for The Amazing Spider-Man #521 is a beautifully moody piece of work — Spider-Man clings to the edge of a shadowed building, silhouetted against an enormous full moon hanging over a quiet city skyline, his glowing white eyes the only detail that pierces the darkness. The cool teal palette and dramatic low-angle composition give the whole image an almost noir atmosphere that feels perfectly suited to a story titled "Unintended Consequences." With J. Michael Straczynski writing and Deodato on interior art as well, this 2005 Marvel issue pairs a striking visual identity with a creative team operating in confident lockstep.
