The issue falls near the end of Gerry Conway's initial multi-year run on Amazing Spider-Man, a period he later reflected on with particular affection, calling it some of his best ASM work and singling out Andru's cinematic, wordless airport sequence in this very issue as evidence of the artist operating at his creative peak. Conway and Andru had been the book's core team since the landmark Gwen Stacy death issues, and #143 was edited by Len Wein, who had recently taken over editorial duties. The story opens on New Year's Eve in New York and pivots to Paris, making the creative team's pre-internet research into French landmarks — the Place Vendôme, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower — a quietly impressive production feat noted by later readers.
