By the time issue #8 shipped with a February 1990 cover date, Mirage staffers Stephen Murphy (writing under the house pseudonym 'Dean Clarrain') and Ryan Brown had been steering the Archie series since issue #5, immediately diverging from the 1987 cartoon's lighter register into original story arcs with social and environmental undercurrents. Murphy plotted and scripted 'Wild Things' alongside Brown; pencils were by Ken Mitchroney, with inks by Dan Berger, lettering by Gary Fields, and colors by Barry Grossman, under editor Scott Fulop and managing editor Victor Gorelick. Wingnut's creation is credited to Ryan Brown, and although the character had a prior, villainous micro-appearance in a Ralston-Purina TMNT cereal mini-comic from 1989, the Archie version's design, origin, and heroic alignment were effectively a wholesale reinvention.
