“To Laugh and Die in Metropolis”

The Joker wearing Superman's costume while cackling maniacally — surrounded by a wallpaper of "HA HA HAs" — makes for one of the most unsettling cover images of 1987. John Byrne's bold, close-up composition puts that ghastly grin front and center, and the tagline "Guess Who's in Metropolis…?!" does exactly what a great cover should: make you desperate to open the book. With Byrne writing and drawing and Karl Kesel on inks, this clash of DC's worlds promises something genuinely strange heading Superman's way.
