Spider-Man: Kraven's First Hunt #[nn]
"Kraven's First Hunt" (Amazing Spider-Man #565–567, 2008) marks the debut of Ana Kravinoff — Kraven the Hunter's teenage daughter — who immediately establishes herself as a formidable new threat by targeting Spider-Man and nearly unmasking him, seeding the character who would become central to the 2010 "Grim Hunt" storyline. The arc is also the first appearance in the Brand New Day era of Sasha Kravinoff as an active presence, setting the family dynamic that would culminate in Kraven's resurrection. As a deliberate structural mirror of the acclaimed 1987 classic, it invites readers to measure the Kravinoff legacy against one of Spider-Man's most psychologically intense stories while establishing fresh generational stakes. The arc was significant enough to be collected in both a standalone Premiere Edition hardcover and multiple omnibus formats, cementing its place as a foundational chapter of the Brand New Day run.
In "Threeway Collision," Peter Parker, disguised as Daredevil, leads a tense underground chase through the sewers with Vermin, tracking Ana Kravinoff—who believes Vin Gonzales is Spider-Man. As the real Spider-Man and the masked Daredevil clash in a brutal fight, it’s Vermin who ultimately brings down Kravinoff, setting off a chain of revelations. Back in the hospital, Vin is confronted by Spider-Man with an explanation that’s hard to swallow—and even harder to believe. The story, written by Marc Guggenheim and illustrated by Phil Jimenez with inks by Andy Lanning, colors by Chris Chuckry, and letters by VC's Cory Petit, features a striking cover by Chris Bachalo and Tim Townsend.

The arc was produced during Marvel's ambitious "Brand New Day" initiative, in which The Amazing Spider-Man shifted to three issues per month with a rotating creative stable following the status-quo reset of "One More Day." Marc Guggenheim, one of the rotating writers on that initiative, scripted the arc with Phil Jimenez on pencils — Jimenez being celebrated at the time for his detailed, McFarlane-influenced figure work on Spider-Man. The story was collected first in a November 2008 Premiere Edition hardcover (also gathering the Harry Osborn backup from Brand New Day Extra) and later reprinted in trade paperback form; it was subsequently absorbed into the larger Brand New Day Complete Collection Vol. 2.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Story arc spans Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #565–567, cover-dated July–August 2008, published by Marvel Comics.
- First appearance of Ana Kravinoff (Ana Tatiana Kravinoff), the teenage daughter of Sergei Kravinoff/Kraven the Hunter, who adopts the Kraven mantle and targets Spider-Man.
- First significant comics appearance of Sasha Kravinoff (Kraven's widow) as an active, on-panel presence orchestrating the hunt alongside her daughter.
- Written by Marc Guggenheim with art by Phil Jimenez; the arc is one of Guggenheim's installments within the Brand New Day rotating-writer format.
- The story deliberately echoes the structure of the landmark 1987 arc "Kraven's Last Hunt" — Ana steals Peter's Spider-Man costume, forcing him to borrow Daredevil's, and the creature Vermin is involved just as he was in the original story.
- Ana initially kidnaps Peter's roommate Vin Gonzales, mistaking him for Spider-Man — a case of mistaken identity that drives much of the three-issue plot.
- Daredevil (Matt Murdock) guest-stars, re-establishing his friendship with Spider-Man in the post-"One More Day" continuity.
- Collected in the Amazon/Marvel Premiere Edition hardcover (November 2008), the Spider-Man: Kraven's First Hunt trade paperback (April 2009), and later in Spider-Man: Brand New Day — The Complete Collection Vol. 2 (collecting ASM #565–577 and related material).

Dressed as Daredevil, Peter battles Vermin and forces him to lead him through the sewers to where Ana Kravinoff is holding Vin Gonzales, the man that she thinks is Spider-Man. Daredevil (really Peter) and Spider-Man (really Vin) battle the new Kraven but it is Vermin who finally brings her down. Recovering in the hospital, Vin is approached by Spider-Man who comes up with a pretty reasonable explanation as to why a supervillain thought Vin was the web slinger. Vin is not amused. With her first hunt a partial failure, Ana runs home to her mother.
