“Tomb Raider”

Sonic sports a rugged explorer's hat as he and a wide-eyed Tails come face-to-face with a fearsome, mechanized lion creature and what appears to be an ancient, temple-carved setting — perfectly setting the stage for a story titled "Tomb Raider." The cover by penciler Pat Spaziante and inker Harvey Mercadoocasio crackles with energy, packing the frame with a cast of wild characters including a muscular figure wielding claws and a bearded elder lurking at the edge of the action. This February 1999 Archie Adventure Series entry looks like a genuinely fun adventure romp that earns its "World's Most Way Past Cool Comic" banner.
