About this Issue

Rom #8 (July 1980) delivers the first appearance of Serpentyne — a brooding, radiation-mutated Saurian who is the last of his slaughtered people — making it a genuine first-appearance key within the early arc of Bill Mantlo's run. The issue is a strong example of Mantlo's signature approach: using the Dire Wraith invasion as a lens for exploring grief, genocide, and isolation, themes that gave the toy-licensed series an emotional weight that outlasted the Parker Brothers product it was created to support. Serpentyne's introduction also deepens the series' world-building by connecting the Clairton underground to Ms. Marvel's continuity through the Saurian race, demonstrating how tightly Mantlo was weaving Rom into the broader Marvel Universe even in only its eighth issue. The issue was later collected in the long-awaited ROM: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1 (2024), the first time Marvel was able to reprint these stories after decades of licensing complications with Hasbro.

In "Deathwing!", Rom crashes a Wraith funeral in search of clues about his missing neutralizer, only to be ambushed when the Wraiths summon a monstrous Deathwing that sends him plunging through the earth into the hidden lair of Serpentyne. Written by Bill Mantlo and brought to life with dynamic art by Sal Buscema and coloring by Ben Sean, this issue blends tense mystery with escalating danger. The cover, by Michael Golden, captures the moment of impact with striking intensity.

History

The series was written by Bill Mantlo and drawn by Sal Buscema, the creative team who launched the title with issue #1 (December 1979) after Parker Brothers licensed the Rom toy to Marvel as a promotional vehicle. Editor Mary Jo Duffy and Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter oversaw the issue, which was released on April 15, 1980, with a July 1980 cover date. The cover was painted by Michael Golden, who contributed several covers to the early run, lending the book a more painterly, atmospheric quality than the interior Buscema art. Because Parker Brothers — and later Hasbro — retained ownership of the Rom character and the Dire Wraith concept, the entire original run was locked out of reprints for decades until Marvel struck a new licensing agreement with Hasbro in 2023.

The story title is 'Deathwing!' — named for the creature the Dire Wraiths summon at a mock-funeral to destroy Rom. The Deathwing's attack sends Rom plummeting into Serpentyne's subterranean lair, ending the issue on a cliffhanger.
Serpentyne's race, the Saurians ('The People'), were established as atomic-test mutations from New Mexico who had previously encountered Ms. Marvel in her own series — a deliberate continuity callback by Mantlo connecting Rom's world to existing Marvel titles.
Supporting characters Brandy Clark and Steve Jackson appear; the issue also advances the subplot of Silas Lane, the county mortician who begins to detect anomalies in the 'deaths' of Dire Wraith victims, providing human-scale detection of the alien infiltration.
The issue was reprinted for the first time in ROM: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1 (January 2024), after a lengthy gap caused by Hasbro's ownership of the Rom character preventing Marvel from publishing collections of the original series.
Serpentyne appears only briefly at the end of this issue (effectively a cameo/first appearance) before his full story — including his death — plays out in the following issue, Rom #9 ('The Stalker in the Night!', August 1980).
