New Mutants #3
This third volume of the 2011 New Mutants series collects the 'Fall of the New Mutants' storyline, where the team faces a devastating attack from the Elder God-like entity known as the Shadow King. As the villain targets the psychic vulnerabilities of the young mutants, including Dani Moonstar and Karma, the New Mutants must confront their deepest fears and traumas to survive. The collection also features a tie-in to the 'Age of X' crossover event, testing the bonds of this resurrected team of classic and newer members.
In "Fall of the New Mutants: Part 1," Sam struggles with self-doubt as leader while Scott urges him to take the team on a much-needed vacation. Pixie, still simmering over a rift with Illyana, heads off on her own to clear her head. Meanwhile, General Ulysses and Dr. Noc, frustrated by General Combest’s hesitation, make a bold move to pursue Illyana Rasputin on their own.
In "Fall of the New Mutants: Part 2," flashbacks reveal General Ulysses’s team trapped in Limbo after their mission to weaponize the Inferno babies goes awry, leaving them sealed in a realm they can’t escape. In the present, General Combest confronts Ulysses and Dr. Noc over the abduction of Pixie, uncovering truths that shift the stakes in unexpected ways.
In "Fall of the New Mutants - Part 3," Illyana races to save Pixie, teleporting the New Mutants into Limbo to buy time against Ulysses’s growing threat. With help from Witchfire, the team launches a daring assault on Ulysses’s base, only to face the fierce resistance of the Inferno mutants guarding the stronghold.
In "Fall of the New Mutants - Part 4," the New Mutants face off against the grown Inferno babies, whose unexpected alliance with General Ulysses and Dr. Noc is revealed through a revealing flashback. The stakes rise as the team confronts the consequences of past choices in a battle that tests their unity and resolve.
In the fifth and final chapter of "Fall of the New Mutants," Jo and the surviving New Mutants face a desperate race against time as General Ulysses and Dr. Noc extract the bloodstone from Pixie’s Soul Dagger using Magik’s Soulsword. With the U.S. Air Force closing in, the team must flee toward Limbo to complete their dark mission—before the cost of victory becomes too great.
Illyana returns to the X-Men with Karma and Pixie, rallying them to stop General Ulysses’ scheme—only to find it’s already underway, and the elder gods of Limbo have broken free. With a secret move already in motion, Illyana’s decision to stab Karma with the Soulsword sets a hidden plan into action, leaving the team unprepared for what’s to come.
In the climactic conclusion of "Rise of the New Mutants," Illyana (Magik) faces the consequences of her plan as the X-Men confront the elder gods summoned by General Ulysses—whose underestimation of their power proves fatal. With the bloodstones reclaimed and Pixie’s stolen magic returned, Illyana offers a quiet hope for her friend’s future before turning toward her brother, whispering she’s back—though Karma sees the truth beneath the moment.
