Zaran filled a specific storytelling niche in the Marvel Universe as an unpowered, weapons-obsessed mercenary whose arsenal and ruthlessness made him a credible physical threat without supernatural augmentation. By June 1979 Doug Moench had been the series' primary writer since taking over from Steve Englehart around issue #20, and Mike Zeck had transitioned from fill-in artist to the regular penciler with issue #71. Gene Day had just debuted as the regular inker one issue earlier, with #76, making #77 only the second issue to feature the now-celebrated Zeck–Day pairing on interior art. Roger Stern edited the issue under editor-in-chief Jim Shooter. The cover was penciled by Zeck and inked by Bob McLeod — a different inker than the interior — while the story itself was inked by Day, a common production variation of the period. The entire Moench/Zeck/Day run on the title was later collected in the Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu Omnibus Vol. 3.
