Loveless #19

Vertigo's gritty post-Civil War Western series Loveless reaches its fourth chapter of "Blackwater Falls" with this October 2007 issue, written by Brian Azzarello with interior art by Werther Dell'Edera. Marcelo Frusin's cover sets a memorably grim tone — a lone figure in a wide-brimmed hat strides forward leading a horse whose back is piled high with human skulls and skeletal remains, all bathed in a scorched amber and red sky. It's a haunting image that captures everything Loveless does best: the unforgiving brutality of the frontier, drenched in consequence and dread.
