Azzarello and Dell'Edera's post-Civil War western Loveless reaches its fifth chapter of "Blackwater Falls" with this haunting December 2007 Vertigo issue. Marcelo Frusin's cover sets a grim tone: a lone man stands with a noose around his neck beneath a bare tree, flanked by Union soldiers whose faces are rendered as grinning skulls, rifles in hand against a cold twilight sky. It's a stark, unsettling image that captures the series' signature mood — where the war may be over, but justice and death remain uncomfortably tangled.
