“Panic from a Blackmail Box!”

From the late Silver Age comes this intriguing entry in DC's premier super-team series — Justice League of America #62, "Panic from a Blackmail Box!" The cover, penciled by Mike Sekowsky and inked by Jack Abel, frames the scene with wonderful unease: Batman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman peer down with alarm into what appears to be an open box or case, inside which a tiny costumed figure stands trapped or imperiled. That striking visual — four of DC's mightiest heroes rendered helpless by something small enough to fit in a container — captures exactly the kind of clever, imaginative threat that made 1968 Justice League stories so satisfying.
