Justice League of America #43
From March 1966, this issue of Justice League of America throws Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Hawkman into their most audacious challenge yet — pitted against the playing-card-themed Royal Flush Gang. Mike Sekowsky's cover pencils (inked by Murphy Anderson) capture the villains' bold confidence perfectly: the Ace of Clubs looms front and center with fists raised, while the costumed King, Queen, Jack, and Ten flank him as the five JLA heroes are sent sprawling in every direction. The boastful speech bubble — "Nothing beats the Royal Flush Gang — not even the Justice League!" — sets up what promises to be a delightfully inventive Gardner Fox adventure inside.
