Justice League of America #32
December 1964 brings one of the era's most visually arresting JLA covers, with Superman throwing himself in front of Hawkman to absorb Brain Storm's crackling energy blasts — a self-sacrificing gesture made all the more dramatic by the speech bubble declaring his powers are gone. The Flash and Batman charge in from below while the helmet-crowned Brain Storm unleashes havoc from his yellow vehicle, and the cover pencils and inks by Murphy Anderson give the whole scene a crisp, dynamic energy. Gardner Fox's story — "Attack of the Star-Bolt Warrior!" — promises the world's greatest super-heroes pushed to their limits, and this Mike Sekowsky-penciled issue delivers that promise right from the first glance.
