“Secret of Genesis”

Red Tornado takes center stage on this August 1981 entry in DC's flagship team title, with the cover — penciled and inked by George Pérez — promising "The Ultimate Origin: Red Tornado Revealed!" The swirling, chaotic scene depicts Superman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Firestorm, and Wonder Woman all caught up in a massive vortex, suggesting the android hero's true nature is about to shake the entire League. As a bonus, this issue ships with a free 16-page All-Star Squadron preview, making it a genuinely packed package from the "New DC" of 1981.

The JSA's members are captured by future foes they have yet to meet, given they are from circa 1947, and led by an unknown menace. Only Hawkman, Atom, and Dr. Mid-Nite escape capture, thanks, in part, to Robotman's appearance. Meanwhile, FDR is worried at the White House, as he's been unable to contact the JSA, so they can stop the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941.
