Giant-Size X-Men #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeReleased on May 28, 2025, Giant-Size X-Men #1 serves as the opening chapter of a five-part anniversary event explicitly timed to mark fifty years since the 1975 original that reshaped the X-Men franchise — making it Marvel's most structurally self-aware X-Men anniversary project since the Krakoan era one-shots of 2020. The issue carries genuine narrative weight as the first story to dramatize Kamala Khan's latent mutant powers awakening within the context of classic X-Men history, retroactively weaving Ms. Marvel into the founding mythology of the 'Second Genesis' era. Its backup feature, 'Revelation: Superior,' delivers the first appearance of Justina LaGuardia, a Roman mutant whose power of absolute superiority over anyone near her — including Charles Xavier himself — positions her as one of the most formidable new characters introduced in the X-books in years. Together, the two stories reframe both a beloved character's identity and fifty years of established continuity at once, a genuinely ambitious editorial mandate.

The 2025 Giant-Size X-Men event originated from X-line editor Tom Brevoort's announcement, made in late 2024, that a 50th-anniversary celebration of the original 1975 issue was coming 'but not exactly in the way you're imagining.' Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing — already handling NYX at Marvel — were assigned the five-issue spine of the project, with Adam Kubert (himself a storied X-Men artist) penciling the opening and closing chapters, and C.F. Villa and Francesco Manna handling the middle installments. The creative structure deliberately parallels the 1975 original's own dual-narrative DNA: just as Len Wein and Dave Cockrum's book contained both a lead adventure and archival reprints, the 2025 version pairs a main time-travel story by Kelly and Lanzing with standalone 'Revelations' backup stories by writers including Al Ewing, Sara Pichelli, Steve Foxe, Jeph Loeb, Saladin Ahmed, and Jed MacKay, each seeding future X-Men storylines. A prelude issue distributed free on May 3, 2025 — Free Comic Book Day 2025: Fantastic Four/Giant-Size X-Men #1 — primed readers for the event before the main series launched.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Published May 28, 2025 by Marvel Comics; first of five oversized one-shots running through August 2025, collectively titled the Giant-Size X-Men: Second Genesis Revisited event.
- Main story ('The Mutant That Walks Like a Man') written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, with art by Adam Kubert and colors by Laura Martin; lettered by Clayton Cowles; edited by Tom Brevoort.
- Backup story ('Revelation: Superior') written by Al Ewing with art by Sara Pichelli and colors by Federico Blee — the first appearance of Justina LaGuardia (codename: Superior), an Italian mutant detective whose power allows her to instantly surpass the abilities of anyone near her, including outclassing Professor X's telepathy.
- Justina LaGuardia's debut is set in the same 1975 era as the original 'Second Genesis,' framed as a hidden moment Xavier experienced while recruiting the new X-Men — she refuses his invitation and telepathically wipes his memory of their encounter.
- The main story features Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) pulled back in time by Legion to witness the X-Men's first encounter with the sentient island Krakoa, the same adventure depicted in the original 1975 Giant-Size X-Men #1; she joins the Second Genesis rescue team alongside Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird, Storm, and Banshee.
- The issue marks the in-story moment when Kamala's latent mutant powers begin to surface, depicted as a golden hard-light aura — powers later confirmed to be the generation of hard-light constructs, paralleling her MCU power set and distinct from her Inhuman embiggening ability.
- Adam Kubert's cover art is a deliberate visual homage to Dave Cockrum's original 1975 Giant-Size X-Men #1 cover, with Kamala Khan inserted into the roster alongside the classic Second Genesis team.
- The full event was subsequently collected in the trade paperback Giant-Size X-Men: Second Genesis Revisited, collecting all five one-shots plus material from the FCBD prelude.
