G.I. Joe, a Real American Hero #48
In "Slaughter," the stakes rise on Cobra Island as Storm Shadow’s fate hangs in the balance and Dr. Mindbender preserves his remains for a sinister purpose. With Cobra making a bold move to force diplomatic overtures from the U.S., tensions explode when Zartan attempts to flee after a shocking blood test reveals his true identity—only to be stopped by the newly arrived Sgt. Slaughter. As the Jugglers warn Hawk that Cobra Island is now off-limits, the Joes face a new threat from within and without. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Rod Whigham, with inks by Andy Mushynsky, colors by George Roussos, and letters by Joe Rosen, the cover by Mike Zeck captures the moment’s intensity.

Cobra agents remind the U.S. it's in their best interests to open relations with Cobra, or the island could be used by their enemies to hit the U.S.. Zartan makes an escape attempt after Doc finds who he truly is after a blood test is done (and Ripcord's call to the base while under Dreadnok watch), but he's stopped by new recruit Sgt. Slaughter.
