Even in the middle of nowhere, Beetle Bailey manages to class things up — this 1955 Dell issue features the lovable Army slacker kneeling beside a tree-stump table complete with a white tablecloth, candles, flowers, and a tin-can "glass," all while a little red radio keeps him company. Mort Walker's warm, expressive linework captures Beetle's signature mix of optimism and absurdity in a single charming scene. A delightful snapshot of one of comics' most endearing underachievers making the best of his lot.
