“How Santa Got His Red Suit”

In a 1944 tale from Four Color #61, writer Gaylord Du Bois and artists Arthur Jameson (both interior and cover) spin a quiet, heartfelt origin for Santa’s red suit. When two warring knights split their village in two, years of division and violence erode the community’s faith—until a mysterious boy appears on Christmas, calming the children and leading them to a chapel in the wildwood. Their parents, searching in fear, find the children singing together in harmony, a moment that sparks a long-overdue return to peace and faith.

Two quarrelsome knights divide the village of Benn in half. As time goes by the village falls away from the Christian religion and becomes a cruel, violent place. One Christmas a strange boy appears, who stops all the aggression in the children and leads them to the Chapel in the Wildwood. Their parents come looking for them and find the children singing hymns together. The villagers vow to change their ways and return to the church.
